crate training
Hi
I dont crate train mine for indoors but we do train them in the crate for travelling.
What I usually do is leave the crate in the kitchen for a few days before I start travelling in the car on short trips before hand. I leave the door open and put a toy and a few treats in there, I dont close the door and they go in and out, but its not long they go in and lie down and fall asleep.
Good luck with your training and your puppy
Maggie

Re: crate training.
Put Poppy in her crate on Friday night but left the door open she didn't bark once and she slept through till 6.45.
I left her for a while barking about 5 mins when she didn't shut up I got up to her. The reason I got up was in case she wanted to go out as my hubby through the week is up at 6.30 and takes her out for a walk. I put her out in the back for about 5 mins she didn't do anything so brought her back in and placed her again back in her crate with the door open. When I left the room she started to bark again so yes I did it again sprayed water on her did this 3 times then she stopped and settled down again till i got up at 8.15. I made a big fuss of her and said what a good girl she was and we then had a nice walk before I went to work.
I wasn't hear last night my daughter said she was good when she went to bed but she woke up at 6am barking and my hubby just ignored her.
So fingers crossed tonight she sleeps again.

Thanks think we are getting there.
My daughter bless her said yesterday she kept putting her in her crate so she would get use to it but didn't like the idea of locking it so she climbed in with her and locked them both in for a while.

I didn't really want to use one at first as i felt I was locking her up (prison) I know silly. My last dog had the freedom of the house and he was great didn't chew anything and slept well, Fireworks never bothered him which I was so glad about as my dog before him (when I lived at home) was scared to death of them.
Poppy as been great it was just the night time with her think she was just missing us. I didn't want her upstairs with us but must admit been very tempted through lack of sleep to give inn.
I'm hoping she sleeps well again tonight.
Will let you all know tomorrow how she does. Fingers crossed

Re: crate training.
You have to remember that downstairs is a very big place for little shih tzu.... they do feel safer in a secure "nest"
Re: crate training.
Well I put Poppy in her crate last night left door open again. (She came straight back out) But we didn't hear a bark or cry off her all night.
Today she as been in and out of her crate just going into have a little sleep then she has come out once awake.
So hopefully we have cracked it and she will be a little :angel3: at night now as well as the day.
Thanks guys for all your advice and support.

Re: crate training.
She's been a little :angel2: up to now she as slept for the last Four nights.
We put her in her crate with the door open and then off to bed and we don't here a pep out of her all night. This morning she started barking at 6.20 but I could hear car doors (people going to work). Thinks she will be a good watch dog.
So fingers crossed we have cracked it. Think with the crate and me spraying her with water every time she bark worked. She loves the crate she's in and out of it all day. She didn't seem impressed when the cat went in it this morning but once Poppy went in and started tormenting the cat she soon came out.
Heres a picture of them both together playing.

Re: crate training.
It really sounds like you have cracked it now!! Poppy is doing really well
Picture looks great - pity I can't see it all but from what I can see I don't think the cat minds too much being tormented

I think the cat thinks she's a dog. They get on so great together and are funny to watch. My other cat stays out of the way of them both.
I hope we have cracked it don't want to speak to soon.
