Disinfectants / Household Cleaning Products

Post by YoshiSweet on Thu Feb 25, 2010 10:21 am

Hi there,

I was initially told not to clean with bleach as it contains ammonia which to a dog smells like urine. Which means that my puppy Yoshi may think another dog has done a wee on a non designated toilet spot and feel the need to wee there to mark his territory. My challenge now is, my kitchen and entrance hall are now smelling very 'doggy', I went out today and bought some Dettol and Pine Disinfectant. Can these be used or will they cause the same problem as the bleach?

I need to get on top of this smell before it gets any worse, hubby is not keen on a smelly house and he is now staring to complain. My kitchen especially needs to be hygienic as I'm sure you can understand with all the food preparation etc. If these products can't be used does anyone have any recommendations for me, if you do please let me know asap, I desperately need to get cleaning!

Thank you
Desiree teddy hug

Hiya if you read the lables they should say if it comtains ammonia. if you go to any supermarlet they do do a natural range which is i think a yellowy colour (sorry i cant remember the name of it). but it states ammonia free on it they should be a whole range which is like this. it smells like lemon, guess you'll be able to get other smells if you dont like lemon lol. but after they are toilet trained we moved back to bleach lol they dont wee on it, so tell your husband its only for a little while lol Smile xxx hope this helps and if i find the name of that stuff ill let you know xx

The best thing you can use Desiree is a product speicifically for this. If you go to Pets at Home they have several odour control products on sale. I have used their own product with great effect. It doesn't just mask the smell it removes it and it worked brilliantly when I had had a litter of pups and their mum had had a very big accident and then kept returning to the spot - it stopped her completely because she could no longer smell it (even though I had cleaned it thoroughly and thought there was no smell prior to using it!)
There is also a great disinfectant which you might find there too - it is used for kennels and stables and really does work - can't quite remember the name of it and I am in work at the minute but when I get a chance I will go searching for it to let you know.

VIRKON S was the one I was th8inking of but there are dozens out there suitable for kennels/stables and they all have odour remover for urine smell incorporated into them Very Happy

Hi, i use allsorts but never had a problem, we have wood floors throughout downstairs and use pledge wood soapy cleaner i clean the rugs every so often as Oscar cleans his face on them after eating/drinking. The floor in the conservatory is tiles and i do sometimes use a bleach based cleaner killitbang to get rid of bad marks, but mostly flash.

Here is one specifically for dogs and is supposed tobe safe too Very Happy

SAFE4 Environmentally friendly disinfectant

BTW sometimes with lino or laminate flooring a little bit of the pee seeps through the gaps - so you might need to check that. really one little pup shouldn't be making such a bad smell - do you use pee pads for him??

Oh dear God no. Mixing bleach and amonia are a major no-no Mixing the two can be quite deadly

Mixing bleach and ammonia creates chlorine gas. Chlorine gas is so powerful it was used as a chemical warfare agent in World War I. This stuff can kill you. If it doesn't kill you, it can cause pneumonia and make you extremely sick.

I've responded to victims of chlorine gas twice while working on an ambulance. In both cases, the victim cleaned just one room before becoming overwhelmed by the fumes. Also in both cases, my team and I did not know the reason we were responding and were surprised by the poisonous cloud.

In just a few seconds we were all complaining of coughs, scratchy throats and watery eyes. It felt hard to breathe within a couple of minutes. In both cases, we got the victims out of the houses in a hurry and finished our treatment outside in the fresh air.

Poison control centers nationwide got almost 215,000 calls about cleaning agents in 2006. It was the third most common complaint. This isn't a rare occurance.

Never mix bleach and ammonia. Period. End of story.

I use a mixture of bleach and water in a spray bottle and have had no problems with it.

This is the first I'm hearing about not using bleach. I've always used it even with my last Shih Tzu and she lived well into 13 years old with no problems.

I don't think Desiree was using bleach and ammonia together Kate Very Happy

I too have used bleach diluted over the years - mainly to keep my work surfaces and floors clean and hygienic.
