Hi to everyone from Swansea Empty Hi to everyone from Swansea

Post by sujay Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:15 am

Hi there, hope you don't mind me joining Whispers. My name is Sue and I have joined because I am looking at the possibilities of my parents having a Shih Tzu, and wanted to learn everything about them (the Shih Tzu I mean, not my parents - I know them already!!!) Smile Smile Smile

Both of my parents are retired, and so are at home all day. My mum had a stoke three years ago, and would love a furbaby as a companion. Although she has limited use of her left hand, she is capable of looking after a dog in all other aspects. Also my Dad is there all the time, and I am very close so call in all the time. They have a large house with a lovely garden, all totally enclosed and made safe for a dog when I had my Westie pup 7 years ago. We have looked into the breed and it seems like they will be the ideal companion for my Mum. She wants a small dog that will be happy to keep her company, and be her friend. We don't have any small children involved in the family, the youngest is my seventeen year old daughter, so that will not be a problem at all.

As I say, I have a 7 year old Westie, and assume that as long as they are introduced properly from the beginning that the two dogs should be fine together. I have friends with Shih Tzus and have not had a problem with them before. My dog is fine with smaller dogs, but isn't keen on anything larger than him! I will also be walking the dog with mine sometimes, but that will be no problem as we have plenty of open spaces, beaches, and cliff top walks here.

My parents are fully aware of the additional costs involved from insurance etc, as I believe there is no way you can have a dog nowadays without it. They also have a vet already lined up (the same on I use), who we have spoken to about the breed. There isn't a problem with grooming and clipping, because I will be doing that for them, seeing as I have been clipping my own dogs for over 20 years now (we had a very bad experience with a groomer when my first dog, a poodle was literally scalped when he was 6 months old in the middle of December for no reason. I swore them I would never take a dog to a groomers again, and never have).

Sorry for the long post, but what I am really asking, is do you all, as experienced owners and obvious lovers of the breed, think it would make the ideal companion? I would prefer you to be honest if you think it is not an ideal choice, but my Mum is totally won over by the breed with all of the research we have done so far.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this thanks

Hi and welcome to whispers Very Happy
You'll find lots of advice on here, I'm no expert but a Shih Tzu sounds ideal for your mum, the only problem I could see while reading through would be the grooming but as you will be doing that then problem solved. Very Happy
I know Adele on here has health problems and she finds her Shih Tzus wonderfull companions when she is feeling particularly poorly. I'm sure she'll be along herself shortly to tell you.

    Hi there Sujay

Welcome to the forum and I am pleased to hear you have put so much thought and consideration into this. I would say wholeheartedly YES - these little dogs make perfect comapnions for old and young alike and as youhave all the bases covered I see no problem whatsoever. It sounds tome that your westie is well-socialised and although it may take a little while for him/her to get used to the newcomer there should be no problems. One of the things to think about maybe is having a shih tzu of the opposite sex to your dog to make for easier introductions Very Happy

I wish you well in this venture and if you need any help or advice don't hesitate to shout Very Happy I am not a million miles away from you in Rhondda South Wales - abd an happy to give any help/advice/support that is needed.

Hi there and welcome to Whispers.
You seem to have everything very well thought through and in all honesty I can't think of a better breed as a companion for your Mum. Shih Tzu are an amazing breed, full of personality, a tad cocky, certainly comical they are also loving, loyal and thrive on human company, what more could anyone ask for? The only thing I can think of that might prove a bit difficult for your Mum would be the grooming but again you seem to have it covered already. Good luck and keep us posted. Very Happy

Thanks for the advice, just wanted to make sure that we weren't choosing the wrong breed by choosing a Shih Tzu, because it would have meant an unhappy Mum, and more importantly an unhappy dog if we made the wrong choice, but is seems that we have made the right choice.

Now for the fun bit, looking for the right puppy. Mum has said she doesn't really mind which sex, she said the over all temperament is way more important. Also for the same reason, she doesn't mind what colour she has. The only thing is, there are a lot of puppy farms around here, and we need to make sure we have nothing to do with them. My vet doesn't know of any puppies due soon, so I will just have to keep my ears and eyes open.

Hopefully we will soon find a nice new furbaby to add to the family, and I will be back asking questions and posting photos!

I can put you in touch with a couple of people in the area - if their addresses are still the same and while they may not have puppies themselves they are involved with the show scene and breed clubs and will probably know of local people. I am in work till nine tonight but will do it later.xxx

Hi Sue and welcome 3 i think everyone has said it all, shih tzu are really great breed for the elderly and disabled as long as grooming is covered, the good thing with shih tzus they adapt very well to any circumstances, i got my first after been diagnosed with M.E find ing myself at home everyday i needed a companion, what i got was a soul mate and a best friend, i must warn you they are adictive i now have 3 and i have not done yet.
although they love to go for a walk, if any day i`m not well enough they are happy to spend the day on the sofa here on whisphers with me, a few runs round the garden is ok for mine, although either me or my hubby tries to walk them daily- the odd day sometimes gets missed.
i have a friend in a wheel chair having lost her leg in a car accident and she too owns 4 shih tzus and occaisanly breeds, so as you can see shih tzus are great companions no matter what, good look in your search i`m sure you will find the perfect companion for your mum and dad Very Happy
